Our History

From the beginning the company’s aim was to create the highest quality furniture and joinery to specific and often exacting requirements.

Swiss Joinery was founded in 1979 by Franz Kaech and Beda Drexel, two experienced tradesmen who had recently moved to Adelaide from Switzerland.

Initially, the pair specialised in shop fittings and domestic joinery, and the early years were marked by ups and downs as they were tested by language difficulties and a lack of work. But Franz and Beda were committed, and through their perseverance and hard work the young company not only survived, but started to blossom.

Swiss Joinery soon shifted its focus to the commercial sector, specialising in office fit outs, and before long became a well-known player in the South Australian construction industry. In 1981 the company was incorporated, with Franz and Beda as directors and Hanni Kaech as secretary.

From the beginning the company’s aim was to create the highest quality furniture and joinery to specific and often exacting requirements. This relied on highly skilled and well-trained craftspeople, and Swiss Joinery not only trained their own apprentices but facilitated the immigration of many Swiss cabinetmakers to operate their state-of-the art, computerised machinery to ensure maximum precision.

Swiss Joinery was not only on the forefront of manufacturing with state-of-the art machinery, but also took a leading role in employee relations, work practices, quality control practices and government accreditation processes.

The Swiss moto “when architects and interior designers talk – Swiss Joinery listens” led to many award-winning projects in both office fit outs and reception joinery.

While Swiss Joinery has changed hands over the years, Franz and Beda still remain connected to the company and their vision for high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail remains to this day.
